Request I may be informed of the progress of

diplomatic negotiations for the release of SAGRES whose

detention is costing owners 1,000 dollars per day.

They are also most concerned in view of their experience

with steamship ASIAN as to safety of officers, whose families

are very anxious, and Chinese crew. The result of my latest

approach to Oikawa is contained in Naval Liaison Officer's

1545 20th April and except for further local pressure

the) lines of my telegram No.232 (which I fear will have

little result and might only complicate the issue) there

appears to be no other action that I can usefully take.
